Welcome back to my blog! If you’ve been following along, thank you for joining me on this journey. I’m thrilled to share that my album finally arrived on Friday! It’s only been two years in the making, so I’m filled with joy, overwhelm, and just a touch of nerves, but mostly - relief. I’m happy to let it go into the world and hope that it resonates with you in some way. And, as always, I hope it lights up your world... no pun intended. ;)
It’s funny how so many artists describe their albums as their “babies.” I can see why. When you live and breathe your music for so long, and then finally release it to the world, it mirrors the anticipation, excitement, and joy of welcoming something new. In that sense, I suppose this album really is my other baby - one that was inspired by my real baby, Alfie.
In many ways, creating this album mirrors the journey I’ve been on as a father. Just like parenting, it’s a process of nurturing, learning, and growing. And that brings me to the meaning behind Night Light - a title that holds much more than its surface meaning.
At first glance, Night Light might bring to mind images of sleep and night - time - a glowing lamp on a bedside table, softly illuminating the room as Alfie drifts off. It’s true that this was part of the inspiration. We bought a night light during the early nesting days, long before Alfie was born, and it became a small but important part of our nightly routine. It offered comfort, reassurance, and a gentle glow that felt protective.
But Night Light is about more than just that physical light. To me, it represents something deeper: a guiding presence, a source of warmth and security, and a symbol of unwavering care. As parents, we are that light for our children - a light that never switches off, always there, always glowing.
Musically, I wanted the album to reflect that same sense of comfort and companionship. While it can certainly serve as a backdrop for sleep, it’s not limited to night - time. Whether it’s an afternoon nap, a late evening wind down, or just a quiet moment of reflection during the day, this music is designed to be a companion - a kind of night light for any time, offering calm and connection.
In terms of sound, the album is more about creating a sense of peace than inducing deep sleep. That said, it could easily serve both purposes. I didn’t write these pieces with sleep in mind specifically, but rather with the intention of crafting music that feels timeless and ever - present - like a comforting blanket, wrapping around you in moments when you need it most. The Night Light isn’t just an object; it’s an idea, a feeling, and a presence that glows within us all, offering warmth and reassurance.
Thank you for letting this album be a part of your journey, and for being part of mine. I hope these songs can be a source of comfort, peace, and maybe even a little glow in your own life.
Thank you for the amazing musing, a true pleasure to listen. Will you publish the partitions of the "Sleepy Song" anytime soon? I am looking forward.
Night Light is beautiful! Track after track, it just keeps getting better and better 👏 Congrats on the arrival of your ‘other baby’
